This indicator, which is used to classify foods and beverages according to their nutritional quality, has become more stringent for a number of products. This change in the <strong>Nutri-Score<\/strong> algorithm represents a major challenge for many food manufacturers. They now have to offer tasty, well-classified products to satisfy consumers who are increasingly concerned about the quality of their food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is Nutri-Score?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Nutri-Score is an indicator that lets consumers know the nutritional quality of the food and beverages they consume by means of a logo on the packaging. The logo is based on a scale of five letters, from A to E, and five colors, from dark green to red. Nutri-Score helps consumers make informed choices by providing nutritional information on the foods and beverages on offer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nutri-Score is calculated based on a ratio of nutrients and foods to be encouraged (proteins, fiber, fruit, vegetables, legumes, nuts, and rapeseed, walnut and olive oils) versus those to be limited (energy, <a>saturated fatty acid<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/metarom.eu\/en\/actualites\/fat\/\">s<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/metarom.eu\/en\/actualites\/sugar\/\">sugars<\/a>\u00a0, salt) per 100\u00a0g or 100\u00a0ml of the product.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nutri-Score 2024 : Towards European harmonization<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Nutri-Score was introduced in France in 2017, then adopted by six other European countries, namely Belgium, Switzerland, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands and Luxembourg. These seven countries have been working on harmonizing the way a product\u2019s Nutri-Score is calculated since 2021 to bring it in line with their respective dietary recommendations.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This effort has resulted in a new algorithm, which has been applied since January 1, 2024 and which affects beverages in particular:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Milk, dairy drinks and vegetable drinks have been included in this classification<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Low-sugar beverages containing sweeteners have been downgraded<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Water automatically enters category A<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The change in the algorithm has no impact on fruit juices, nectars and smoothies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>As far as food is concerned, this new algorithm benefits certain products, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Fish and oils rich in good fats<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Foods made with wholemeal flour, unlike their counterparts made with refined flour<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Poultry and fish, which almost always score better than red meat<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Products high in salt and sugar, on the other hand, have suffered greatly from this change, seeing their Nutri-Score severely reduced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cover is-light\" style=\"min-height:355px;aspect-ratio:unset;\"><span aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-cover__background has-background-dim-10 has-background-dim\"><\/span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1709\" class=\"wp-block-cover__image-background wp-image-3398\" alt=\"jeune femme dans un rayon qui scane un produit pour connaitre son Nutri-Score 2024\" src=\"https:\/\/metarom.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/asiatique-violette-scaled.jpg\" data-object-fit=\"cover\" srcset=\"https:\/\/metarom.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/asiatique-violette-scaled.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/metarom.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/asiatique-violette-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/metarom.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/asiatique-violette-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/metarom.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/asiatique-violette-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/metarom.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/asiatique-violette-1536x1025.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/metarom.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/asiatique-violette-2048x1367.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px\" \/><div class=\"wp-block-cover__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-cover-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-large-font-size\"><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Natural flood flavorings : A solution for improving a product&#8217;s Nutri-Score<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It is not mandatory to display a product&#8217;s Nutri-Score. In light of these more stringent requirements, manufacturers may be tempted to protect themselves by not displaying this label. But this may prove not to be a good strategy.
