Flavor of the moment: the mirabelle plum
The origin of the mirabelle plum
The mirabelle plum, a small, round fruit with golden hues, originated in Asia Minor and China, where it has been appreciated since antiquity. It arrived in Europe as part of the commercial trade of the Middle Ages, in particular thanks to the Silk Road. These journeys linked the East and the West and gave it the opportunity to travel. In France, the mirabelle plum was introduced to Lorraine by Duke René d'Anjou. It became a well-established symbol of this region and remains its pride to this day.
The mirabelle plum is the fruit of the mirabelle tree, a hardy member of the Rosaceae family. White flowers appear on the branches in spring, heralding the arrival of fruit in late summer. Mirabelle plums can be recognized by their thin, golden-yellow skin, sometimes marked with small red dots, and their juicy flesh. It is harvested between mid-August and mid-September, when it reaches full maturity.
There are two main varieties: Mirabelle de Nancy, which is rounder, sweeter and juicier, and ideal for desserts, and Mirabelle de Metz, slightly smaller and tangy, perfect for jams and distillation.
