Often linked to appetizers, the peanut is slowly shifting its image. Sweet snacks, chocolate bars, pastries, spreads, protein bars, ice creams and even cocktails—the peanut is making its way into everything!

It’s increasingly found in sweet recipes, where it adds flavor, texture and a generous touch of indulgence. Rich in history and nutrients, it has it all: comforting, full of character and undeniably trendy.

The origin of the peanut

Did you know that the peanut is not a nut, but a legume?
It actually belongs to the same family as beans and lentils. Native to South America, it has been cultivated there for over 8,000 years. The Aztecs called it Tlàlcacahuatl, which means "earth cacao". The Spanish conquistadors later simplified the name to “cacahuate”. Evidence of this culture has even been found in ancient tombs.

After the conquest of the New World, it was introduced to Europe, Africa and Asia, becoming a major crop in tropical and temperate regions. Today, India and China account for 60% of global production, followed by Nigeria, the United States and Indonesia. Even in France, there is a small cultivation area in the Landes region.

Peanuts are very popular worldwide, with nearly 48 million tonnes consumed every year. According to ReportLinker, this figure could rise to 49 million tonnes by 2026. This growing enthusiasm is reflected in the global market value, estimated at $90.42 billion.

The nutritional benefits of peanuts

Often mistakenly seen as an unhealthy indulgence, peanuts are now being viewed in a new light.

Rich in plant-based protein, monounsaturated fats (the good fats) and fiber, peanuts support a balanced diet. It is an excellent source of magnesium, vitamin E and B vitamins, making it a valuable ally for the heart and the circulation and nervous systems. Its satisfying nature also makes it an ideal snack for athletes, vegetarians and anyone looking for a natural protein boost.

However, it should be consumed with caution due to its allergenic potential, which can trigger severe reactions in 1% of the population.

In which products do we find peanuts?

Peanuts are becoming increasingly prominent in the world of sweet treats. In baked goods, it can be found in cookies and brownies, where it adds crunch and a rich flavor. It’s also used in cakes, muffins and tart crusts, often in the form of peanut paste or peanut butter.

In the world of dairy products, it pairs perfectly with ice creams, flavored yogurts and milkshakes, adding a comforting touch. The food industry also loves using them in energy bars, breakfast cereals and energy balls.

The peanut has become an essential signature in sweet snacks, both for its generous taste and its advantageous nutritional profile.
